Silkworms and spider webs may hold the solution to one of the western world’s most pressing health problems – the surge in the need for knee replacements as populations grow older and more obese.
“It is pretty much the biggest clinical problem out there at the moment in the developed world. It is just vast,” according to Nick Skaer ofOrthox. The Oxford-based company has developed small implants for the knee, using silk proteins to make a strong, curved rubber-like material.
