Mali: 'Now we have the clinic in the community, we feel very secure’

A local clinic, opened in 2013, has done much to improve healthcare for women and babies – yet staff have to buy safe drinking water or ask patients to bring it in

In Kalabancoro town on the southern outskirts of Bamako and the right bank of the Niger river, matron Maimouna Maiga is off to do a follow-up visit to the home of 15-year-old Adiaratou Togo, whose baby, not yet named, is only three days old. He will be given a name, as is the custom, on the seventh day.

To me, safe water can’t be replaced – it is very important both for the mum and the baby
